German WW2 K98k Bayonet- Theater-made G.I. "WAR Trophy"

$135.00

German WW2 K98k Bayonet, G.I. Theater-made “War Trophy” with Plexiglas Grip Scales. There were many hours of “hurry-up and wait” for G.I.’s in both the Pacific and European Theaters. Sometimes machinery and tools were available to these soldiers, and they created custom souvenirs made with war bootie and materials available. Portible machine shops followed the front-line combat troops, often tank repair units or machine shops aboard Allied ships. This German K98k Bayonet is a nice example of a European Theater-made trophy. The blued finish has been removed, leaving the metal bright, and now dull on this example. The original grips have been removed and Plexiglas grips have been fabricated from aircraft windshields, likely from a shot-down enemy planes. The Plexiglas has been finely fitted and polished. Often G.I.’s would slip a photograph of their girlfriend, back home, under the clear grips. In this case no photos have been added, and the tube under the handle, which serves as a sleeve for the rifle cleaning rod, is clearly visible. The blade ricasso is marked with the date and maker’s code; “43asw” on one side and a serial number; “5112” and “nn” on the other. Two German military acceptance “waffen-ampt” eagles are stamped into the metal at the butt end of the handle, on one side. The finish is dull metal with grinder or wire-wheel marks over-all, from the removal of the original blued finish. The Plexiglas grips are smooth and optically clear, and they are nicely fitted. Here is a nice example of a G.I.’s expert craftsmanship which was done during idle time while waiting for the next move. Price: $135.00 (ref. B-930)
