U.S.M.C. M-1 Helmet w/ Camo Cover

$750.00

USMC M-1 Helmet with cloth Frog Skin Camo Cover. The helmet is an early WW2 fixed bail, front-seam variation. The straps are machine sown to the bales. The shorter strap is light green khaki, with blackened brass hook hardware. The longer strap is khaki and has the early bright brass plate with a raised bar hardware. The helmet finish is very good, with slight rust stains on the edging of the helmet.  The lot number located on the inside, under the brim is a very early production; “56A”. There is a slight dent on front of the helmet several inches about the “8”. That number “8” is stenciled on the front and rear of the helmet approx. ¾” tall, in red, and there is a red dot approx. ¼” round at the very top of the helmet. The liner was made by Westinghouse, and is marked on the inside of the dome with the Westinghouse “W” logo. The liner has the early WW2 unpainted “A” washers holding the web support straps within it. The leather brow strap is a post-WW2, un-used example, and the nape strap is absent. The liner chinstrap has blackened steel fittings, and the rivets are marked “DOT”, which is of post-WW2 manufacture. The cloth frog skin camo cover appears to me to be the first pattern without uniform slits cut in it. However, there are random cuts in the cloth. On the sand side the double stitching that runs from front to rear has nicely parallel lines, and each stitch has a double thread look. On the jungle side these stitches appear as two single thread stitch. The stitch edging on the cover flaps are as follows; on the sand side it appears as triangles with open tops, and on the jungle side the top stitching is closed. Thee are all attributes of the first pattern cloth camo cover. There is an EGA stencil on both sides of the cover on the stitched seam, but on opposite ends of the seam from one another. The cover has rust marks, which correspond to the rust on the helmet edging particularly the brow, as well as other rust stains randomly overall. I believe it is an early WW2 helmet and camo cover, which was issued post WW2, or during the Korean War. This USMC helmet with camo cover has a great look. It is out of an old collection. Price: $750.00 (ref. A-2682a)
