18th Century Prussian Tobacco Box- Frederick the Great & King James III

$625.00

18th Century Prussian Tobacco Box. It commemorates the association between Frederick the Great and King George the Third, and Frederick the Great’s Battles of Prague of Lobelitz. This box dates from the last quarter of the 1700’s. Pressed brass top and bottom, with copper sides. 6 1/8” l. x 2 3/4” d x 1 1/4” t. (55mm. l x 44 d x 32mm t). The lid shows Fridericus Rex Borussia  (James King of Prussia) and King George III (1760–1820) with their coats of arms. The bottom shows Frederick and the Prussian cypher flanking scenes of the two battles. This box has been polished over the years as evidanced by polish residue in the interior edges. The copper sides are soldered to the brass top and bottom panels. About three inches of the bottom front seam has come unattached in the middle of the box length. The box is solid and unaffected by this issue. Three of the nine barrels on the hinge are partially missing. The box opens and closes solidly. The edges of the top and bottom, as well as the prominant features have worn off. Even still, many fine details remain, such as the mounted cavalry in the battle scenes. At that time trade and relations between the two countries was very active and these found their way to England as trade goods. Neither battle of a decisive win for Frederick the Great. I would judge the condition of the details as very good plus. Not as worn as some I have seen. The interior shows great tooling and hammer marks. These were used heavily in the period and this one remains a very nice example. The mixed metal detail is a desirable variation. Price: $625.00 (ref. A252)
