Cast Iron MATCH SAFE w/ Hunting Dog & 1862 Patent Date

$85.00

Cast Iron MATCH SAFE w/ Hunting Dog lid. It has the patent date; “PATD JAN 21 1862” cast along the front edge with a Hunting DOG in relief across the lid. 4“ wide, at hinge pins x 2 ¾” deep x 1 1/8” tall at back panel. I believe the hinged lid is the reason for the patent date. The hinge pins are cast, and are part of the safe bottom. The lid has two “stops” cast inside, where the lid contacts the rear of the hinge pins. The hinge pins are captured by two sheet iron tabs, which appear to be cast into the cast iron lid. There are two holes in the back panel to mount this safe close to the fireplace or wood stove. This one has an incredible folksy look. There is a small casting flaw (hole) below the dog’s left eye! It is sure to keep your matches safe and handy, ready for a smoke or to light the fire! Price: $85.00 (ref. B-832)
