French WW1 Souvenir “Trench Art” Tobacco Lighter. “THE TANK”. 1 11/16” diameter x 2 5/16” tall at striker wheel x 7/16” thick. Brass body, with copper alloy 1 5/16” diameter discs on each side. This two-metal use is very scarce in these lighters, all brass construction is far more common. One side shows a WW1 early M-1 Tank, with a 'steering tail' which aids in steering, similar to a rudder, trailing behind. “THE TANK” is at the top in the clouded sky. The reverse shows a classic female silhouette holding a flag pole, with sheet music in the background in front of her gaze. These WW1 French Lighters are often referred to as “Trench Art”. In actuality, they were available to troops on leave near the front lines or bigger cities far from the action. In these lighters the striker wheel assembly is tapered into the body of the lighter, and is attached by friction while pushing it into the body. The striker wheel rolls freely, I have not attempted to remove it to put in a new flint. An original un-used wick is covered with a threaded cap. This lighter is complete and in excellent condition. The wick cap or striker assembly are often missing on many examples. This brass and copper Lighter is outstanding, complete and has lovely decorations, each one incredible in it’s own right.
