ZIPPO "ETHYL CORPORATION" Fourth Variation Bancroft Table Lighter

$175.00

Zippo Bancroft Fourth Variation Table Lighter. Nicely engraved with the logo of Ethyl Corporation; which is a circle with “ETHYL ANTIKNOCK COMPOUND”, “ETHYL CORPORATION” and “November 1, 1929”. The engraved logo is factory applied enamel paint; the lettering is yellow and the surrounds are blue. There is some loss of the blue enamel, and minor loss to the yellow. These colors are subtle, but are nicely accented in sunlight. I do not know the reference to the date 11/1/29. There are some small pecks in the brushed finish on the lid above the logo on the base, the hinge side has a few small, and the back has a few. The insert present in this example is the 1953 Full Stamp with the “C” in circle copyright logo. The 4th Model was in the catalogue from 1954 through 1979. The base has minor edge loss of the felt, very minor. It should be noted that these Zippo Table Lighters had additional batting material inside their base, as well as a wick placed at the base of the lighter insert. This would allow for extra capacity of fuel. Overall, this is an excellent example of a 1950’s Bancroft Table Lighter with early High-Octene Muscle Car interest. Ethyl was a lead-based fuel additive. Cars ran well on it, but it was toxic to living things and was removed from automobile gas in the late 1980’s through the “Clean Air Act”. Many workers at the Ethyl plant got lead poisoning. This great “Ethyl Antiknock” Zippo has had only limited use, and is in excellent condition. Price: $175.00 (ref. C-143a)
