German Composition Toy Soldier "Bandsman with Bass Drum" by ELASTOLIN, circa 1930's. 3” tal x 2 1/4s” long. These are composition material (kaolin, saw dust and hide glue paste over wire armature) which is formed in molds and baked. They were often farmed out as piece work to Haus Fraus to be hand painted to strict quality standards. The base is marked “Elastolin”. The ELASTOLIN brand is one of the top tier of German Composition with Lineol close ahead. This example is nicely detailed with eyes, drum details and the distinctive Bandsman’s “Swallow Nest” insignia at the uniform jacket shoulders.
