American Eagle by Artistic Carving Company of Boston- 1950's

$2,850.00

American Eagle by Artistic Carving Company of Boston, Massachusetts. Circa 1950’s. 48” wide x 17 ½” tall x 4 ¾” deep. It is carved pine with paint and gold leaf finish. This fierce American eagle has a banner proclaiming; “Live and Let Live” in it’s beak and clutches a stylized red, white and blue shield and a cluster of arrows. Artistic Carvings Company eagle plaques are a modern representation of a John Haley Bellamy carving, well done with exceptional detail until the 1950’s when the company went out of business. Condition notes: The rough pine blank was created by glueing several chunks of pine together before carving. A glue seam opened where the original pine blank was glued together and it has been expertly restored. The original glue joint is visible on the back, where screwed iron straps were added when the glue joint opened. It appears that gilt gold leaf was used on the “back-side” of the upper wings, really in spots out of sight of the viewer. This in no way distracts from the visual impact of this eagle. It has lovely bright colors, and a nice weathered patina. There is red color loss in the stripes of the shield, and in some places the gold finish and color appears thin. This eagle was outdoors a number of years and has weathered well. These carved eagles came in six foot and four foot wing span examples, among Artistic Carvings Company’s other offerings. They show exceptional detail and depth. This American Eagle is fine and very impressive. It has an wonderful American patriotic feel. These Artistic Carvings Company American Eagles are folk art! Price: $2,850.00 (ref. A 2-2). Please feel free to contact me to answer your questions about this piece!
