AMERICAN Civil War Token. Copper, 3/4” diameter. These 1860’s period tokens were penny size with various patriotic themes, some dated, some not.. This example has “ARMY AND NAVY” with laurel surrounding with crossed swords and an anchor at the bottom. The reverse has; “THE FEDERAL UNION” centered, and “IT MUST AND SHALL BE PRESERVED” surrounding with thirteen stars completing the circle. The edge on this side has five knife cuts, which probably were done in the period. If a fellow wanted to test the edge on his knife, he might grab a coin from his pocket and try to cut it. The copper neatly yields to the steel. This token is not worn from years of carry. It would rate as fine to extra fine in coin condition, with the noted nicks. A statement of the times.
